How does DesigNA turn my DNA into a necklace?

You order a DNA collection kit and take a cheek swab at home. You return the swab in the prepaid envelope. Our UKAS accredited UK laboratory partner reads short tandem repeat markers from your sample, and we translate that pattern into the order of stones and pearls along your necklace. The piece is then hand finished in Birmingham and shipped with a certificate of authenticity.

Is the necklace really unique to me?

Yes. Your DNA is a sequence written nowhere else, ever, so the design generated from it exists in exactly one place. Every necklace ships with a certificate of authenticity carrying the unique marker sequence that produced it. The only exception is identical twins, who share most genetic markers.

How long does it take to receive my necklace?

From the laboratory receiving your sample, your piece is analysed, designed, hand finished in Birmingham and posted within 7 to 14 working days. The collection kit itself ships free within the UK in 2 to 3 working days.

What is a DNA profile necklace?

A DNA profile necklace is a piece of jewellery where the order of stones and pearls along the chain comes directly from the wearer's own genetic markers. DesigNA uses short tandem repeat analysis, the same forensic technique used in UK identity testing, to read those markers and translate them into the design.

Is my DNA safe and private?

Yes. Sample handling and data storage are governed by UK GDPR and the Human Tissue Act 2004. The physical sample is destroyed once analysis is complete. The marker data is encrypted at rest and deleted after delivery. We do not read clinical, ancestry, or behavioural markers, and we never sell or share your data.

What stones are used in the necklace?

You choose 5 stones from a palette of 11 semi precious stones at the point of order. The marker sequence from your DNA dictates the order those chosen stones appear along the necklace. Available stones include lapis lazuli, carnelian, amethyst, citrine, blue lace agate, rose quartz, garnet, tigers eye, aragonite and others.

Not at all. A buccal (cheek) swab is one of the most gentle and non-invasive methods of biological sample collection used in clinical and genetic testing. You simply rub a cotton-tipped swab against the inside of your cheek for around 30 seconds. There is no discomfort, no needles, and no specialist knowledge required.

Yes, with parental or guardian consent. A signed consent form must be included with the sample. For babies and young children who may find a cheek swab difficult, the cotton tip can be gently rubbed between the bottom lip and gum instead. Please refer to our FAQ page for full details on consent requirements for under-16s.

If the cotton tip is touched before sampling, the swab may be contaminated with external DNA, which can affect the quality of the sample. If this happens, please do not use that swab. Contact us at sales@mydesigna.co.uk and we will arrange a replacement kit free of charge.

Food, drink, and tobacco can leave residue in the mouth that may degrade or interfere with the DNA sample. We recommend avoiding anything other than water for one hour before collecting your swab, and rinsing your mouth with water immediately beforehand. We recommend posting your sample on the same day or the next day after collection. Buccal swab samples are generally stable at room temperature for several days, but prompt posting ensures the best quality result and reduces any risk of degradation. Your kit includes a prepaid Royal Mail return envelope for convenience.

It is handled by Complement Genomics Ltd, our ISO-accredited laboratory partner, under strict compliance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 and UK GDPR.
