The Science Behind Your DesigNA Piece: How DNA Becomes Jewellery
Share
Every DesigNA necklace begins not in a workshop, but in a laboratory. Before a single stone is selected or a chain is measured, your DNA is extracted, analysed, and decoded. This is the story of how that process works, and how the invisible becomes something you can wear.
Step One: The DNA Collection Kit
When you place your order, we send you a simple at-home DNA collection kit. The process takes about two minutes. Using a sterile swab, you take a gentle cheek (buccal) sample, no needles, no discomfort, no clinic visits. The swab captures thousands of cells from the inner lining of your cheek, each one containing a full copy of your DNA.
You seal the sample, return it using the prepaid packaging provided, and our laboratory partner takes it from there.
Step Two: Laboratory Analysis
Our laboratory partner is one of the most established DNA testing facilities in the UK, holding over 25 years in genetic testing and. This isn’t a novelty service, it’s the same rigorous science used in forensic identification and clinical diagnostics.
In the lab, your DNA is extracted from the cheek cells and amplified using a process called PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), a technique that creates millions of copies of specific DNA segments so they can be accurately read and analysed.
Step Three: STR Profiling
The core of the analysis uses Short Tandem Repeat (STR) profiling, the gold standard in human identity genetics. STRs are short sequences of DNA that repeat at specific locations in your genome. The number of times a sequence repeats at each location varies from person to person, creating a combination of values that is, for all practical purposes, unique to you.
We analyse multiple STR loci across your genome, generating a numerical profile, a sequence of values that encodes your individual genetic identity. This is your genetic signature: the data that no one else in the world carries in quite the same way.
Step Four: Translating Data Into Design
This is where science becomes art. Each value in your genetic profile corresponds to a specific element in your necklace, the type of semi-precious stone, its colour, and its position along the chain. The arrangement isn’t aesthetic guesswork; it’s a direct, systematic translation of your genetic data into a visual language.
Different stone types, blue lace agate, lapis lazuli, carnelian, garnet, aragonite, tiger’s eye, green agate, jade, each represent different genetic markers. The sequence in which they appear on your necklace mirrors the sequence of your DNA profile values.
Step Five: Handcrafted to Order
Once the design has been determined from your genetic data, your necklace is handcrafted by our jewellers. Every stone is individually selected, every piece assembled with care. The chain, the clasp, the finish, all chosen to present your genetic story in the most beautiful way possible.
From the moment your sample arrives at the laboratory to the moment your necklace is ready, we ask for 2 to 3 weeks from the day your sample arrives at the laboratory. It’s not a production line. It’s a process, and the result is something that has genuinely never existed before.
A Piece That Could Only Be Yours
The science behind DesigNA is not incidental, it’s the whole point. We didn’t choose DNA profiling because it sounds impressive. We chose it because it is the only mechanism that can guarantee true, irreplicable individuality. No template, no algorithm, no aesthetic formula produces your necklace. Only you can.
