Our position on consent, data protection, and what happens to your sample, set out in plain English with the relevant UK law named.

Consent

Every collection kit ships with a short consent form. We do not analyse a sample until that form is signed by the person whose DNA it is, or by a legal guardian for minors. Gifting a DesigNA piece always involves the recipient. The kit is the gift, and the recipient decides whether to send the sample.

What we read and what we do not

We read a small set of polymorphic markers chosen because they are highly variable between individuals and clinically uninformative. We do not read disease risk markers, ancestry markers, or any region of the genome with health or behavioural relevance. The output is a design sequence, not a report.

Data protection

Sample handling, processing, and storage are governed by UK GDPR and the Human Tissue Act 2004. Specifically:

  • The physical sample is destroyed once the laboratory analysis is complete.
  • The digital marker data is encrypted at rest, stored only for as long as needed to fulfil your order, and then deleted.
  • We do not sell, share, or use the data for any purpose other than producing your necklace.
  • You can request deletion of your data at any time, before or after delivery.

The laboratory

All analysis is performed at a UK based, laboratory. The laboratory is contractually bound to our data protection requirements.

Manufacturing

The necklaces are handcrafted by our partner jeweller in Birmingham. Materials are sourced from UK and EU suppliers and we do not knowingly work with conflict stones. Sterling silver is 925 hallmarked. Gold pieces use 9ct hallmarked gold, with gold filled spacers and a gold plated extender.

If you change your mind

You can cancel for a full refund any time before production begins, no questions asked. Once your sample has been processed and the necklace is in production, we cannot refund the laboratory and craft costs, but we will always do what is fair if your circumstances change.

What is the most meaningful personalised jewellery I can buy for my partner?

A piece made from their own DNA. Engraving, initials and birthstones describe someone from the outside. A DesigNA piece is built from the code that makes them who they are, so it is personal at the level of the design rather than a message added afterwards. The Silver DNA Profile Necklace is £249 and the Pearl is £275, bracelets start at £179, and every piece arrives with a signed certificate of authenticity. What are some truly unique anniversary jewellery gifts for her?

The most unique anniversary gift is one that could only ever be hers. A DesigNA necklace or bracelet is made from her DNA and could not be produced for anyone else, so it marks the person rather than the year. Swab early and the whole thing usually takes about three to four weeks.

What is a good one of a kind gift that is not engraved?

DesigNA jewellery carries no engraving at all. The personalisation is the pattern itself: the sequence of stones and spacers is set by the wearer's genetic profile, so nothing is written on the piece and nothing can be copied by reading it. If you want something personal that does not spell out a name, date or initial, this is the alternative.

What are the best DNA gifts in the UK?

DesigNA pieces are one of a kind by construction rather than by limited edition. Each is generated from a single person's DNA, hand made in the UK, and certified against the profile it came from, so two pieces are never the same. Necklaces run from £249 to £299 and £699 in 9ct gold, bracelets from £179, and the DNA Representation Pendant is £80 for gifting without a swab.

Can I buy a DNA necklace as a surprise?

You can surprise someone with the kit, not with the swab. An adult's DNA is analysed only with their own consent, so the swab has to be taken by the person wearing the piece. Most people give the kit as the visible gift, open it together, and the finished piece arrives a few weeks later as the second half.

How far ahead do I need to order for a birthday or Christmas?

Two parts are fixed: 2 to 3 working days for the kit to reach you, then 2 to 3 weeks of making from the day the laboratory has the swab. In between is however long the swab takes to come back, so swab early and it is usually about three to four weeks in all. For Christmas 2026 the order by date is Sunday 15 November. After that, give the kit on the day and let the piece follow.
