What is DNA jewellery? A plain English guide
Share

DNA jewellery is wearable design generated from a specific person’s genetic information. Each piece is unique to one wearer and cannot be reproduced for anyone else.
A working definition
The category covers any jewellery whose design is determined by reading a customer’s DNA and translating part of that genetic data into a visual or structural pattern. The most common form is a necklace, but DNA bracelets and earrings also exist.
What separates DNA jewellery from monogram, birthstone, or coordinate jewellery is that the design is not chosen by the wearer. The arrangement is dictated by biology, captured at a single point in time, and committed to a physical object.
How DesigNA fits the category
At DesigNA we read specific markers from a saliva sample analysed in a UK laboratory. Those markers determine the sequence of stones and pearls along the necklace. The customer chooses the metal and the stone palette. The arrangement is generated entirely from the genetic data.
The result is a single object that cannot be made twice. Even identical twins, who share most of their DNA, produce different DesigNA designs because we read multiple markers and the rendering is sensitive to small variations.
Why people choose it
Three motivations come up repeatedly with our customers.
- Genuine uniqueness. A name necklace can be copied. A DNA necklace cannot.
- Milestone marking. Births, anniversaries, recoveries, and graduations all benefit from a piece that captures a single person at a single moment.
- Heirloom intent. The certificate of authenticity, the laboratory analysis, and the one of one design make a DesigNA necklace easier to pass on with meaning.
What it is not
DNA jewellery does not store your DNA inside the piece. The sample is processed at the laboratory and the resulting data is used to design the necklace. The finished object contains only the metal, stones and pearls you can see.
It is also not a medical or ancestry test. DesigNA reads markers chosen for their design potential, not for clinical or genealogical insight. No health or heritage report is provided.
Cost and timing
A DesigNA piece starts at £299 for sterling silver and freshwater pearl options, rising to £699 for 9ct gold. Every necklace is handcrafted in the UK by our partner jeweller in Birmingham. The price includes the DNA collection kit, laboratory analysis, certificate of authenticity, and the signature packaging. From receipt of your sample at the lab, production and UK delivery take 2 to 3 weeks.
